Eggs At Your BBQ? You Bet!
Blogue de la présidenteOn sweltering days, when it’s too hot to turn on the oven to make dinner, here’s my back up plan: I turn to the backyard grill for many of my family’s summer meals. Over the years, I’ve tried dozens of amazing egg recipes on my barbeque, and today I’m going to share some of my favourites with you. Eggs on the barbeque? It sounds surprising, but a whole new world of flavour awaits you with these delicious ideas.
Grilled Eggs: Whether you are in your backyard or at a campsite with a mini grill, you can make the equivalent of hard-boiled eggs without boiling water. And they are so delicious! To make grilled eggs, simply take a raw egg and place it on the grill. After 10 minutes, you’ll have semi-soft yolks, perfect atop avocado toast or for jammy eggs on tossed salad. If you wait 15-20 minutes, the eggs will be fully cooked and are perfect for making chopped egg salad (such as our Tangy Dill Egg Salad . The hot-off-the-grill eggs will continue to cook once removed from the heat, so have an ice bath ready. (Bonus: the cool water will also make them easier to peel.)
Scrambled Eggs on the Barbeque: If you have a cast-iron skillet or other high heat pan, there’s no reason to turn on your stove this summer! Keep the house cool and barbeque your breakfast instead. With some butter, whisked eggs and your favourite add-ins (maybe some cheese, scallions or mushrooms), you can have scrambled eggs in minutes, done right over your barbeque grill top. Take it one delicious step further by adding those scrambled eggs to portobello mushrooms, with fresh basil and mozzarella. Here’s the recipe for our Caprese Scramble Stuffed Grilled Mushrooms.
Eggy Sweet Peppers: Sweet red or yellow peppers are the perfect ‘bowl’ for this all-in-one recipe. Simply cut the top off a pepper, remove the seeds and add 2 whisked eggs. Sprinkle with salt, pepper and your favourite grated cheese, and cook on the barbeque (close the lid) for about 25-30 minutes, or until eggs are set. Kids love this idea because after they eat the eggs out of the red pepper bowl, they get to eat the bowl too!
Egg Kabobs: You’ve probably tried beef or chicken skewers on the grill – but what about egg kabobs? This creative dish is simple to make. Start with our EGGS2go! hard-boiled eggs, cut them in half vertically, and thread them onto bamboo or wooden skewers, alternating with red onion, grape tomatoes, zucchini and button mushrooms. Brush with your favourite marinade, and grill for about 4 minutes.
Grilled Pizza: Making pizza on the barbeque allows you to gently char the crust, so it tastes like pizza right out of a wood-burning oven. Adding egg elevates it even further. Try our Grilled Egg and Ratatouille Pizza – just use your barbecue instead of your oven. We also do a great brunch pizza on the grill: we top the crust with olive oil, spinach, mozzarella and bacon, then crack a few eggs on top – sunny-side-up style. We put that on the grill for about 6-8 minutes – and it is gourmet pizza!
Dessert on the Grill: Don’t turn off the barbeque after dinner, because you still need to grill dessert. I suggest our Grilled Peach, Apricot and Sweet Ricotta Layered “Bread Pudding. It’s creamy, sweet, sticky and so delicious. Imagine French toast, but elevated.
I hope you enjoy these ideas as much as my family does!
